Ages of Tolrendor

“To understand a world, one must first understand the forces that shaped it. To understand Tolrendor, one must understand the Ages through which it has endured.”

Grand Sage Ithrakar, Cartographer of Worlds, Seventh Circle of the Nexus

Introduction

Among the countless worlds recorded within the Archives of the Nexus, few possess a history as turbulent—or as consequential—as Tolrendor.

The sages of the Nexus divide the world’s history into seven great Ages. Each marks a profound transformation in the relationship between the world, the Principles that shaped it, and the mysterious substance known as Ember-stone.

Though the names and dates vary between cultures, this chronology is accepted by most scholars of the Amber Pentacle and the wider Nexus alike.

The Age of Shaping

The earliest and most mysterious of ages.

During this time, the Five Principles touched the world directly. The Mother gave form to life and land. The King established purpose and order. The Dreamer inspired possibility and transformation. The Weaver preserved memory and truth. Beyond them all lurked the Maw, the eternal hunger that sought the unmaking of all things.

The foundations of reality were established. Mountains rose. Oceans formed. Dragons, giants, spirits, and countless elder beings first appeared. It was also during this age that the earliest Ember-stone came into existence, forged by the immense forces unleashed during the shaping of creation.

Almost nothing survives from this era save myths, fragments, and relics older than history itself.

The Age of Strife

The Age of Strife was the first great conflict of the world, an era in which gods, giants, primordial powers and mortal champions battled for the fate of creation itself. The age culminated in the Sundering, when the Veil was raised and the world was forever changed.

Yet no single account of these events survives. Different peoples preserve different memories of the conflict, and scholars continue to debate how much of each tradition reflects historical truth.

The Sundering

The single most important event in the history of Tolrendor.

Faced with the possible collapse of creation, the powers of the world enacted a great severance. The Veil was raised between Tolrendor and the wider cosmos, restricting the direct influence of gods, primordials, and countless other powers.

The Sundering reshaped continents, shattered ancient realms, created the Inner Sea, and transformed Ember-stone into the many forms known today.

Firestone, Froststone, Amber-Iron, Orichalcum, and other rarer manifestations all trace their origins to this cataclysm.

Though the world survived, it emerged forever changed.

The Age of Brightness

The Sundering preserved the world, but it did not bring peace.

The remnants of the Age of Strife still haunted Tolrendor. Across the shattered lands, giant-kings ruled from ruined fortresses, ancient dragons claimed dominion over whole regions, corrupted spirits prowled forgotten battlefields, and creatures born of the world’s wounds preyed upon scattered mortal settlements.

The Veil had severed the direct influence of gods and primordials, yet their legacy remained. The world was free, but it was neither safe nor united.

For generations, the peoples of Tolrendor endured a long struggle for survival. Many ancient realms vanished during these centuries, leaving little trace beyond broken stones and half-remembered legends.

It was in this darkness that the Bright Ones appeared.

The true nature of the Bright Ones remains one of the great mysteries of Tolrendor. Some traditions teach that they were chosen champions of the Principles. Others claim they were souls reborn again and again through the Veil whenever the world stood in greatest need. The sages of the Nexus offer no definitive answer, noting only that records of their deeds appear across every culture and continent.

Wherever they arose, the Bright Ones brought hope.

They gathered scattered peoples, overthrew tyrants, slew ancient horrors, reclaimed forgotten knowledge, and established sanctuaries amidst the ruins of the old world. Many of the greatest cities, kingdoms, and traditions of later ages trace their origins to foundations laid by the Bright Ones and their companions.

As the centuries passed, the darkness slowly receded. Trade routes reopened. Settlements grew into towns, and towns into cities. Learning, craftsmanship, and civilisation flourished once more.

For this reason, historians remember these centuries not for the dangers that threatened the world, but for the light that endured despite them.

Thus the age became known as the Age of Brightness.

The Age of Crowns

The golden age of civilisation.

The great kingdoms and empires of Tolrendor reached the height of their power. Trade connected distant lands. Arcane knowledge advanced dramatically. The mastery of Ember-stone fuelled wonders unmatched before or since.

The Dragonborn Empire of Varandia dominated vast territories. Great dwarven kingdoms expanded their subterranean domains. Maritime powers flourished across the Inner Sea. The greatest monuments of the world were raised during this age.

Yet prosperity bred ambition, and ambition invited corruption.

The first signs of future decline began to appear.

The Age of Ruin

No age of greatness lasts forever.

Empires fractured. Ancient alliances failed. Wars, disasters, invasions, and hidden corruption shattered institutions that had endured for centuries.

Entire cities vanished. Great roads fell into disrepair. Libraries burned. Knowledge was lost.

Many of the ruins explored by adventurers today date from this period. Vast treasures and forgotten lore remain buried beneath the remnants of fallen kingdoms.

The Order of the Amber Pentacle survived these centuries, preserving fragments of knowledge that might otherwise have vanished entirely.

The Age of Shadows

The current age.

Tolrendor remains a world of opportunity and danger. Great powers still exist, but none rival the empires of old. Ancient ruins are rediscovered each year. New Ember-stone deposits are sought by kingdoms, guilds, cults, and secret societies alike.

The Order of the Amber Pentacle strives to preserve knowledge and protect the Veil. The Dark Amber Conclave seeks power through forbidden means. Beyond mortal sight, older forces stir in forgotten places.

Some believe a new Age of Crowns lies ahead.

Others fear that the corruptions that nearly destroyed the world during the Age of Strife are awakening once more.

The sages of the Nexus offer no judgement.

History teaches only that every age believes itself to be the last before destiny changes.
